This post is about a simple birthday dinner celebration for Yitian together with Regina and Jun.
I haven’t known Yitian for very long. Maybe slightly over a year. But her angelic yet quirky personality has won me over and I think she is the sweetest girl.
Time and company are one of the most precious and least treasured commodities so even a gathering of girls to have a simple Japanese dinner at Clementi Mall with a birthday cake for Yitian can be a very lively affair.
The birthday cake was a very delicious fruit cake with tons of almonds (my favorite nut)! We all sang her the birthday song and snapped photos while she made her wish.
I’ve always wondered why people lighted candles on birthday cakes so I did a little wiki digging. Here’s what I found :
“The tradition of placing candles on birthday cake is attributed to the early Greeks, who used to place lit candles on cakes to make them glow like the moon. Greeks used to take the cake to the temple of Artemis. Some say that candles were placed on the cake because people believed that the smoke of the candle carried their prayers to the gods. Others believe that the custom originated in Germany where people used to place a large candle in the center of the cake to symbolize ‘the light of life’.
In present times too, people place candles on birthday cakes and a silent wish is made before blowing out the candle. It is believed that blowing out all candles in one breath means the wish will come true and the person will enjoy good luck in the coming year. Some also smears out the name of the person before slicing of the cake to bring good luck.”
Regina and I picked out Yitian’s birthday present the day before. Yitian only likes certain colors so it was a little challenging for us but we managed to find a gift that she likes! I love the powder blue too and it took some self restraining to not buy anything for myself while shopping for her gift!
After dinner and cake, we spent the rest of the evening karaoke-ing at a nearby KTV. Singing our lungs out!
Happy Birthday Yitian, looking forward to many more years of fun and friendship!

Outfit for that day.
I try to go casual whenever I get the chance cause I usually have to wear office suitable clothes on most days. This outfit is pretty Japanese inspired since I bought everything during my last trip to Japan except for my shades and shoes. My shoes, however, I bought together with Regina and they are from Drip Drop which is a Japanese brand that has found their way to Singapore.

You really look great in short hair! I thought your friend Regina had short hair as well?
Liza, Thanks! My gf Regina does have short hair but in this post she is wearing a wig. However, own hair has grown quite long already.
