Motel Mexicola
I stumbled on Motel Mexicola with Zippy (who took this series of photos) when I visited Bali earlier this year. Unlike what the name suggests, this is not a motel, hotel or even bed and breakfast. Motel Mexicola is a trendy and photogenic Mexican themed bar and restaurant in Seminyak (the hip hood of Bali). I loved the colours and retro feels that somehow works with the electric mix of ‘holy’ shrines and neon lights. Basically, happy vibes only!
The food I had was nothing mindblowing (basic tacos and nachos) but the service here is impeccable! Their smiles and hospitality make you feel right at home. I was told by the staff (who gave us some free tequila shots) that I should visit again after 8 pm to see how this place transforms into a Latin-styled party joint with a live band and lots of dancing opportunities. After spending an hour or so in this place, I won’t be surprised if you get disorientated and think you are holidaying in Cancun instead of Bali.
This trip to Bali happened shortly after the Mount Agung volcano eruption in January. Although there was a lot of sensationalised news on the terror of the volcano eruption, there was nothing out of the ordinary while I was in Bali. It is still business as usual everywhere. Besides, there are a lot of other ways to get out of Bali (like taking a ferry to Java which I did to see some mystical blue flames here), so I wasn’t too worried. Bali has developed so much and so quickly, there is always something new for me to explore each time I visit. Honestly, it was an incredibly short weekend getaway though wished I had more time to shop and cafe hop.
