Edge, The Musical

I’ve had an extremely eventful last week with plenty of gatherings, festivals and shows. Now that the weekend has come to a close, I’m busily sorting out the various photos.

If you are having the Monday blues, maybe this post might perk you up and get you excited for the coming week because I’ll be giving out 2 pairs of tickets to watch Edge, The Musical! Read more for details.

Currently staged at The Drama Center (Singapore National Library), Edges is a musical about four young adults coming of age, growth and self- discovery.

I love the theater, watching a play, a musical or dance never fails to excite me. Given a choice, I much rather spend my free nights catching a performance then being at the movies. Nothing beats live performances and if catching the acts with a group of close friends is icing on my cake.

Unlike the usual musicals that revolve around a dramatic plot, Edges, belongs to a new genre of musical known as a song cycle. It is a collection of songs by the same writers revolving around a common theme (much like poetry) and usually ends addressing the same song that it started with. The show has now been done over 100 times across North America, Asia, Australia, Europe and Africa and you can finally catch it in Singapore!

Edges will be showing from 3 – 19 April 2013 at the Drama Centre. It is staged by Derrick Chew, Artistic Director of Sightlines Productions with musical direction by Joel Nah. The cast included Benjamin Kheng, Mina Kaye, Kristy Griffin and Linden Furnell.

Singapore has come a long way in the arts and culture scene which really warms my heart.  The four actors/actresses were fantabulous with their incredible voices and high energies, they kept the momentum going from start to end without breaking a sweat. I’m impressed!

Even though it isn’t a musical that has a distintive plot-line from start till end, Edges is still able to capture your attention, your laughter and your heart with funny pop-culture references and endearing love and loss situations that you would have encountered in your life at one point or another.

Among the 15 songs, my favorites would be Man of My Dreams, I Hmm You and Be My Friend. I’m not going to spoil the surprise for you by telling you what the songs are about (so it’s best that you go catch it asap!) but I’ll share with you that one of the songs is about Facebook addicts which I know we all are.

Artistic Director, Derrick Chew (pictured above with me) and Sightlines Production are bringing the local theater scene to greater heights and I’m excited to see what else they’ll have in store for us this year.

Thanks also to Melva, JW, Steven and Mr. Refuse-to-be-photographed behind the lens for spending the evening with me. I know you all enjoyed yourselves and the production cause I caught laughters and smirks during the show 😉

For my dear readers, as I promised you, I’ll be giving out 2 pairs of tickets for you to enjoy Edges, The Musical just as I have.
