I love taking spicy and fiery sichuan food even though sometimes my stomach can’t take the heat. And if you are also a sichuan cuisine lover, I highly recommend you give Chengdu Restaurant a go. It’s been recommended as one of Singapore’s best Sichuan restaurants but I didn’t check it out till now and I’m convinced!
We started our dinner with a couple of cold dishes but won’t go through every single dish I ate. Instead, I’m going to only highlight the dishes that I absolutely think is awesome in this place!
Their signature 水煮鱼 Fish Filets in Spicy Chili Oil (S$18.80 small; S$36.80 large), is one dish you must order. One of the perks of this restaurant is that they cook each dish only when it’s ordered so you can dictate the level of spiciness when you order. Just looking at the huge amount of chili and other spices that they’ve added in, you can tell that they definitely do not stinge on their ingredients.
I love how Chengdu allows you to customize most of your dishes as well. You can add beancurd skin, glass noodles, vegetables or any other ingredients, just make sure to state how you would like to customize your dishes. The fish slices were fresh and plentiful as well. It’s not hard to see why Chengdu restaurant has so many regular customers.
I started my post with a big fiery dish cause most people I know that love Sichuan cuisine would most likely love spicy foods as well. But when I was at Chengdu restaurant I realized that they also cater to those that are not able to take spice. While I love spice, my tummy can’t take a whole lot so I think it’s a great idea to balance up with a few non-spicy dishes as well. One of the non-spicy dishes is the 陈皮鸡 Diced Chicken in Sweet & Sour Paste (S$13.80 small; S$26.80 large. It’s a twist on the usual sweet and sour pork with the sauce main ingredient using preserved orange peel.
While we were there, the owner of the restaurant, Alex, thought we might want to try one of the restaurant’s newest creation,上汤娃娃菜 Wawa Vegetables in soup (S$12.80). I love the rich broth together with the vegetables, pork, century eggs and gingko nuts. It helped to douse the fire that the other spicy dishes were setting off in my mouth.
Coming back to spicy dishes, another signature dish is their 香辣鱼 Spicy Fish (S$18.80). You didn’t read the price wrongly. The whole life cat fish is only S$18.80!! Such a incredible deal and it was so delicious! Once again, you can customize the level of spiciness for the dish. It just goes to show that not all good dishes have to be expensive. Chengdu restaurant prices are so reasonable that some of their customers have dinner there every night. With no service charges, even single patrons sometimes order a whole fish for themselves as it’s an absolute bargain.
I saved my favorite dish of the night for the last. It’s Chengdu restaurant’s 重庆辣子鸡 Chong Qing Deep-fried Chicken (S$16.80 small; S$32.80 large). I’m a huge fan of la zi ji but this is probably the best that I’ve ever tasted. It’s boneless and fried so crispy it’s almost like popping chicken crunchies. Even though it’s super spicy and I was full from the huge dinner, I just couldn’t resist popping the chicken pieces into my month non-stop. If you drink beer, this makes the perfect side dish. Just looking at the photos is making my mouth water.
It was a wonderful dinner and I’ll recommend any Sichuan fans this place anytime. Even if you can’t make it down, you could give them a call because they do free home deliveries for orders above S$50.
