Sentosa BBQ by the Beach

Straight after work, I was looking forward to a relaxing evening as I headed to one of Singapore’s most popular destination, Sentosa. My initial few photos in this post are in black and white as the camera setting was not adjusted for color.

Of course once I realized that the settings were in black and white, a little adjustment was made and the rest of the photos now have colors!

There was so many ways to get to Sentosa, and if I had time I would love to take a leisure cable car ride there but since I was heading down after a work day, I drove in to save time!

As part of Sentosa’s 40th Anniversary Celebrations, a limited time only, BBQ by the Beach extravaganza is set up! I was very excited to be invited for the preview to try them out before they opened to the public.

Located at Siloso Beach (Between COASTES and Azzura Beach Club), they had huge lighted up signs to make sure you won’t have any problem finding the place. I parked at the Beach Station carpark and just followed the big lighted ball signs. Within minutes, I was seated along a pier by the beach ready to have my BBQ by the Beach experience.

I got there a tad late though I think it would have been gorgeous if I had been able to catch the sunset before starting dinner. This place reminded me a little of dining at Jimbaran Bay in Bali with the sounds of waves gently lapping around you, aromas of cooking foods and a slightly salty sea breeze.

By the time I settled in, I realized that I was actually starving so it was time to explore the food that was available! The first stall I looked at was by Coastes which was serving the 3 dishes below using a charcoal grill.

When I think of BBQ, images of honey chicken wings, sambal stingray, sausages and marshmallows comes to mind. But Sentosas BBQ by the beach is a whole culinary experience as each of Sentosa’s food and beverage establishments took charge of stalls to serve up the most fancy BBQ dishes! The lighting was on the dim side so my photos doesn’t do justice to the flavors and  presentation of the dishes but trust me when I say the food is yummy!

There was so much to choose from and all cooked in different BBQ styles! Yes, even BBQ food has variety in cooking methods!

You have stalls with the charcoal grills, stalls with the professional electric BBQ grills, the vertical grill and a traditional Hawaiian grill.  I’m sure the usual BBQ we know is either cooked over the charcoal grill or the electric BBQ grill so let me focus a little more on the other 2 BBQ styles found there that are a little more unusual.

Firstly, the vertical grill. I asked about the chefs the benefits of the vertical grill as opposed to the usual ones and was told that this method of grilling would allow the food to be cooked faster and more evenly. Since oil does not drip into the grill, there will also be no flare ups. If you like to try, their selection of shrimps and squids came with a whole lot of sauces that you can enjoy with.

The most fancy of all the grills available is this traditional Hawaiian Imu underground grill which is found a little away from the food stalls and on the beach itself.

The chefs were very friendly and explained to me that food is cooked really fast when using this grill which is specially constructed for the BBQ by the Beach event. It’s is the only chance you’ll get to try food cooked with a traditional Imu oven in Singapore unless you decide to dig and build on in your own backyard.

I was totally spoiled with so much food choices that night! Fishes of all sorts, alcoholic sausages, salt wrapped parcels, etc. But as with any restaurant meals, there are bound to be personal favorites and here are my recommendation of dishes! I think the BBQ Mango Butter Crayfish and the BBQ Beef Skewers by Azzura Beach Club’s stall are really good! My personal #1 fave however, goes to the Bonito Infused Cod fish by the Amara Sanctuary stall.

I was incredibly delicious! Don’t judge the dish using my low light photo! This you need to order and try for yourself! The garlic rice was so flavorful and the cod was cooked to perfection. I had 2 whole plates of this and I could probably have this for dinner everyday! On hindsight, I wished I could have taken better photos of the food but I had chosen ambience over good lighting for photos. The whole dining by the beach really should be enjoyed that way, with a love ones in tow. Other than the wonderful smells of BBQ food wafting along with the sea breeze, they even had musicians going from table to table!

When the musicians were playing their romantic medley at my table, fireballs started exploding into the sky and I got pretty distracted. It so happens that we were situated in the perfect spot to catch some of the performance by “Songs of the Sea” that was happening along the same beach! The lights in the at the BBQ arena went out at about this point but it didn’t matter to me as the musicians and the fireballs made up for the romantic ambience. I didn’t managed to fully capture the whole fireworks the first time round but luckily there was a round 2 later on.

Ai of sakuraharuka.com was sitting in the table next to me.  Her daughter, Chanel, must have some sort of a natural affinity with me because she clasped on to me the entire night even though that was the first time I met Ai’s daughter. She is so cute, bubbly and I can tell that she was having a wonderful time at this BBQ by the beach!

We were trying to take a nice picture together but as you can tell from the photos, we were all distracted by the 2nd performance of fireworks that night!

After the exciting display of fireworks, we finally settled down for the nice photo that we intended before they had to leave for the night.

It was a wonderful experience for me with good food, wonderful ambience and awesome company. There were quite a number of familiar faces around that night which made it even more fun.

If you want to give BBQ by the Beach a try, you better do it soon as it’s only available for a limited time!

Here’s my outfit section.

I wore a lace top and skirt which I bought from Ching at FEP separately but works together perfectly. I added on a formal white jacket for work and took it off for a more casual outfit when I headed to my BBQ beach date.

I’ve also been braiding my hair up a lot these days, partly due to the hot weather and partly due to my hair growing out and being in the very irritating “in-between” stage. A few of my readers asked me to do a hairstyle tutorial on this and I am willing to do one but it won’t be anytime soon as I’ll be travelling again so it won’t be as easy for me to plan a tutorial in the next few weeks. I will however, get down to doing one as soon as I’m free.

      Odelia,

Thanks babe! My food posts makes me hungry too! I used to be able to eat a lot and not gain an ounce but as age is catching up with me, it’s no longer the case 🙁 If you are heading to Sentosa BBQ by the beach, the cod fish is a good choice!
